Muscle Activation Techniques™ (MAT™) is a revolutionary approach that assesses and corrects a client’s muscular system. It is as simple as that to explain yet it is an amazingly effective and nuanced tool. You may often see and hear about MAT™ in the news because of high profile athletes crediting some degree of their performance or recovery to MAT™ but MAT™ is not limited to professional athletes; Muscle Activation Techniques™ can help everyone!
MAT™ is now a global education company that teaches professionals in the health and wellness industry an enhanced process that can help their clients who have limitations in their muscular system that show up as reductions in range of motion and ease of movement.
Here are eight things that you should know about MAT™:
1.) MAT™ can help explore what could be causing pain. Within the MAT philosophy, Pain is an indicator that something is wrong. It is like the check engine light in your car. It tells you there is a problem, but not necessarily where the problem is. Muscle Activation Techniques™ has a series of checks and balances to see where there are muscle weaknesses (or inhibition). Oftentimes, these muscular weaknesses and the resulting imbalances can contribute to the cause of pain. By addressing the imbalances in the muscular system, MAT™ can work towards resolving the issue. To be clear MAT™ does NOT TREAT PAIN... but rather it explores the muscle systems role in the symptom of pain.
2.) MAT™ ensures that muscles can contract efficiently. Muscles contract when input from the Central Nervous Systems (CNS) reaches the specific muscle or muscles telling the muscle(s) to contract. Just like the current from your cars battery if there is a "bad connection" or the absence of a connection, the motor won't respond. Similarly, muscles that aren't receiving proper input from the CNS become inhibited or weak. This weak muscle loses its ability to stabilize joints and properly protect the body from injury.
3.) MAT™ can help to increase range of motion. Have you ever walked on ice and felt your body immediately tense up? This is an innate response to protect you and try to prevent you from slipping and falling. Just like when you’re on ice, your body can sense instability from weaknesses in the muscular system. The brain then tells other muscles to tighten and limit motion in an effort to protect you. By addressing these muscle weaknesses and the resulting muscular imbalances, MAT™ can reduce the body’s response of tightening and becoming restrictive/tense. Essentially MAT™ is melting the ice for you to move more freely. Many health and wellness professionals focus primarily on improving the range of motion of a client, whereas MAT™ is uniquely different in that it focuses on the muscle weaknesses. When weak muscles are activated properly this can then result not only increased strength but also in an increased range of motion for the client.
4.) MAT™ can help improve athletic performance. By assessing the cause of pain, improving muscle strength (which increases range of motion), and testing and then correcting an individuals muscular capabilities has allowed athletes to enhance their performance when training and competing. Whether you’re a pro athlete or a weekend warrior (or somewhere in between) MAT™ can help you achieve the progress you are looking for.
5.) MAT™ can help people address issues that can contribute to chronic illness. There are a multitude of systems in the body. When the muscular system is working optimally, it is one less stress that the body has to deal with. This frees up the body to address and respond to other contributors to chronic illnesses. Clients of Muscle Activation Techniques™ have claimed that it helped them with their symptoms relating to diseases such as: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatique syndrome, and others. Obviously, MAT™ doesn't claim that it can CURE DISEASES but through improving muscle function, the body functions better as a whole and just like with properly prescribed exercise, stress and inflammation levels can decline which allows the body apply its healing efforts towards the other systemic challenges that it is facing .
6.) MAT™ can assist with addressing some of the challenges of aging. As people age, there is a natural breakdown of the body that can result in a variety of challenges. The most significant challenges include muscle weakness and a decrease in range of motion. This that can effect ones ability to move freely and unencumbered. MAT™ can help to improve ones strength and range of motion by improving the neuromuscular connection to help create more stability as well as mobility while also addressing other symptoms that seem to accompany each passing year.
7.) MAT™ can help prepare you to achieve your goals! We understand how injury, illness, and aging can impact your body’s muscular systems capabilities. MAT™ can help to build a strong and stable foundation so you can get back to what moves you!
8.) MAT™ can help you enhance your career. Click below to see more information on how to learn more about to maximize your career in MAT™

I WORK WITH RYAN COUFAL. WHAT AN AMAZING THERAPIST HE IS. HE HAS BROUGHT ME SOO FAR IN RECOVERY FROM SHOULDER SURGERY. HE EXPLAINS WHAT HE IS WORKING ON AND IS VERY OPEN TO MY FEARS AS WELL AS FRUSTRATIONS REGARDING MOVING FORWARD! HE HAS THE PERSONALITY TO BE SERIOUS AND FUN ALL AT ONCE. I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER WITH RYAN AND MAT CHAR CARBONE
I found MAT through a friend right before I was about to have knee surgery. Eryn and her team have helped me get 98% better through the MAT technique and I highly recommend them to anyone who is faced with chronic pain or is contemplating any kind of surgery. THEY ARE AMAZING!
Very helpful to understand my issues and working on treatment plan. Very professional and knowledgeable.
More healthful than massage or PT, MAT is proactive. After five progressive treatments I suffer less low back stiffness, especially golf related.
Very Pleased with the first session. Looking forward to working with you.
I have been struggling with lower back pain for many years (20+). I have tried many avenues to try to improve the way I feel. Dr. Eryn Paetz has done a tremendous job in relieving my pain - in a very short timeline. She has excellent bed-side manner and is thorough in explaining what is going on with you and your body in terms of how MAT supports improving how you feel. She is a true professional and definitely the BEST in her field. I would recommend Rock Solid to anyone who has tried different venues with no relief. I am a true believer in MAT and how quickly it can make you feel great again. Thank you to my son who recommended me to try MAT!!!
We love Rock Solid Physical Therapy!! Thank you for helping my family be well :)
Best Therapists in MAT!
I have been going to Rock Solid Physical Therapy for over a year. Dr. Prusmack referred me for chronic pain and SI issues. I can honestly tell you after 4 hip/ back surgeries, 6 ankle surgeries, neck (c-4 & c-5) surgery and a knee surgery, I have never experienced PT like MAT! Ryan, Erin, and the entire staff are amazing! MAT strengthens your entire body. They prepared my body 3 months prior to my most recent surgery in late June, and are now assisting me throughout my recovery. I recommend Rock Solid PT / MAT to everyone I know/meet who suffers from chronic pain or their body is in need of an adjustment. MAT addresses the actual root cause of your pain vs pain meds or traditional PT/Chiropractic care. Muscles in motion remain in motion! I highly recommend Rock Solid PT/MAT
I am very satisfied of the treatment , and the service. I have been at MAT many years . I have improved a lot in three treatments. Thank you and I referred many patient to you.
The most effective therapy
MAT at Rock Solid PT has helped me more than anything else to restore function post shoulder labrum tear / arthroscopic surgery. I had no functional use post surgery for three months - had to sell my car with a standard transmission and by one with and automatic transmission, plus many other accommodations. MAT has brought my shoulder function back to 90% pre-injury status, and we are not finished with the treatment plan yet. We (Dr. Paetz and I) expect full recovery by the time the treatment plan is finished. More people need to know about MAT!
